Sunset House - Topping Out

Here, another one of our Portland projects — Sunset House — tops out after the roof trusses have been installed. Top right, two children’s bedrooms will get their own private terraces, while the whole upper level of the house cantilevers out in space to create a rain-sheltered walkway below.

Daxing Villa - GFRC Panel Installation

Meanwhile, in South Beijing, the construction team is installing GFRC (glass-fibre-reinforced concrete) panels on the Daxing Villa, seen in these two (somewhat grainy) images. These massive panels are the outside-most component in a rainscreen cladding assembly designed to withstand the harsh environment, and achieve lasting materiality with a sense of gravitas through the projection and distribution of sheer volumetric mass.

Construction Update - Daxing Villa Rising

Construction continues on the North Elevation of the Daxing Villa, where the crew is infilling block masonry into a structural frame of reinforced concrete.

The villa was conceived as a collection of stacked stone volumes that pinwheel around a central courtyard, where a light-filled garden gives light and focus to the inward living spaces.

To the top left, an exterior terrace will lead to a roof garden; top right, a child's bedroom; bottom right, a kitchen and pantry are separated from service quarters and a service entry (bottom left) by a vertical slot that will function as a garden and light well.

Daxing Villa Construction Update

Construction continues on a rural villa that lies just to the south of Beijing. The building is constructed of a reinforced concrete frame with masonry block infill. In this photo, what will be a children’s playroom affords ample daylight and connections to nature through a pair of generous floor to ceiling windows, with a third window held low that will offer children unique views (at only a child’s eye height) of an exterior garden that meanders its way into the space of the house.

Daxing Villa Starts Construction in Beijing

We're excited to share another project that has started construction, just to the south of Beijing. The Daxing Villa is a 300m2 (~3,000) SF new residence that is organized around a series of internal gardens and narrow courtyards that afford a rich variety of internal views. The villa instigates a contrast between elements that are at once heavy and light, using concrete, wood, stone, and nature as the primary building materials.  The design accommodates multiple generations living under the same roof, takes advantage of south light, and is engineered to withstand a M9.0 earthquake. We are looking forward to following the construction!

Martha House Construction Update

This project, the Martha House, is another one that's close to the heart, and one of a handful of house renovations that we're currently doing in the Portland metro area.  

Sneak peek of a recently completed P+M House

We are very excited to share a little sneak peak of the P+M house, a new 2,700 SF residence for a wonderful young family which was recently completed in Canada. This bank of south facing, triple-glazed windows brings the full canopy of a row of American Elms right into the heart of the house. Look at those leaves!

P+M Construction Progress

We're excited to see one of our new house projects take shape up in Canada, as framing of the second level comes along quickly.

P+M is a new single-family residence for a young family, that is all about light, energy, and human interaction.

The superinsulated house is the product of a process that leveraged severe environmental constraints (minimal direct daylight and southern exposure in an extreme cold climate where temps reach -45 below), as means to maximize daylight, internal / external views, and spaces for family interaction -- all within a compact but dynamic form, on a narrow infill lot.

The project is one of a handful of collaborations between Metaamo + Oxbow.
