Metaamo Awarded SSHRC Grant for Pacific Atolls Work in Micronesia

Very happy to announce that Metaamo has been awarded a significant SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The award is in partnership with Metaamo and our friend & collaborator Dr. James Miller (OCAD University, Toronto), and will be used to launch a series of workshops on participatory, community-based disaster risk reduction planning that will lead-in to a new K-12 school project we're master planning and designing with communities on Majuro Atoll (RMI).

Congratulations and thanks to all our partner organizations who’ve helped on this important project: The Genuardi Family Foundation, Seventh Day Adventist School of Majuro, Living Islands 501(c)3 Non-Profit, WAM (Canoes of the Marshall Islands), OCAD University, College of the Marshall Islands, the SDA Guam Micronesia Mission, and the RMI local government, to name just the short list.

Matt Speaks about Adaptive Reuse on Chinese TV

This past weekend, we were honored to participate in an exhibition at 'Big House' in Wuhan, China, which focused on Adaptive Reuse and Cultural Heritage Protection.  'Big House' is an adaptive reuse project of a former Spin Mill, and now is a gathering place for various events.  Here, Matt is being interviewed for a documentary special that will play on Chinese TV and in public spaces in Wuhan.  Special thanks to the Non-Profit China Endangered Cultural Protection (CECP), the French Consulate General, the Netherlands Business Support Office (NBSO Wuhan), Wuhan TV, and the Ouyang family (descendents of the original building owners) for all making the event possible.

Jinan Urban Design Project Featured in Planning Practice Publication

A low-carbon city project we worked on with MIT and Tsinghua University in Jinan was recently published in the book "Planning Practice: Studios + Workshops 2005-2015" from SA+P Press. The project dealt with Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and urban agriculture, and sought to suggest new building typologies that integrated the vibrancy, flexibility, and community-focused aspects of traditional "villages" into high density, modern developments.

Perimeter City featured in film from MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism

Perimeter City, a project by Matthew Bunza, Andrew Ferentinos, and Max Thelander, is featured in a film by the MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism, a joint program between MIT Architecture and the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning that Matt was heavily involved in.

Perimeter City featured in Culture Now Project

Perimeter City, a collaboration between Matthew Bunza, Andrew Ferentinos, and Max Thelander, has been featured as part of UCLA's Culture Now Project, which looks at innovative proposals for managing urban growth across America's midsize cities.
